Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatment for dry eye is a groundbreaking approach to help eliminate inflammation which is thought to be the root cause of dry, red, and burning eyes. IPL is a light-based technology that has been used in dermatology to treat facial rosacea, vascular and pigmented skin lesions, as well as for skin rejuvenation. It is now being used in eye care to treat meibomian (oil) gland dysfunction and dry eye disease.
IPL is thought to work by penetrating the skin around the eye and sealing abnormal blood vessels that leak inflammatory mediators into the tissue. This leads to reduced eyelid redness, better gland function, improved tear stability, and overall improved ocular comfort. IPL technology is effective, safe, and gentle. For optimal results, 4 sessions are recommended approximately 3-4 weeks apart. The treatment takes about 15 minutes and most patients can resume their normal daily activities the same day. Sunlight should be avoided for several days following the treatment and sunscreen should be applied daily. Maintenance treatments are also recommended once every 6-12 months for the best long-term results.
